Basic Health

E-mail Print PDF

In today’s world, we seem to be moving at a lot faster pace but not getting any exercise. Our movement seems to be by computer, telephone, car, train, plane and a multitude of other fast paced modes of transportation along physical and informational highways.

Here is a list of basic good health habits which, embraced and carried out, would definitely have a positive impact on anyone's health. With this list, you will be able to formulate a good health palan for yourself.

1. Food
A healthy diet can reduce your risk of getting sick and developing chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's and heart disease and increase your chances for a longer, happier life. Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods, our body need more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and no single food supplies them all. Try to have a colorful diet - i.e. fruits, vegetables, beans, etc of different colors. Eat dark green leafy salads, and add plenty of antioxidant & cancer fighting veggies like broccoli and cauliflower. Avoid cheese, processed ham/meats, eggs, pastas, etc. Use salad dressing moderately or sparingly. Try to use low fat/low calorie dressings. Limit the intake of simple sugars and salt/ sodium consumption from all sources and ensure that salt is iodized.

2. Water
Our bodies are over 80% water! Water transport oxygen to cells,  carries nutrients, flush toxins and waste from body, protects joints and organs. Many diseases have been linked to dehydration or lack of water.
At least drink 8 glass of water daily. Adding fresh lime to water will help to alkalize the body. Sodas, coffee, alcohol etc do not count; in fact, these are harmful beverages which actually dehydrate your body. Drink freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, herbal teas (avoid black teas) as well as decaffeinated Green tea. Green te is an excellent source of antioxidants.

3. Exercise
Exercise 20-30minutes 3 times a week minimum is beneficial for the body. Exercise is the only way to help circulate the lymph fluid. Blood and lymphatic circulation are critical to move nutrients to and remove wastes from your cells, as well as helps to detox the body and fight bacteria and viruses. Besides, wweating is a major channel for our bodies to detoxify.

4. Supplements
Depleted soil conditions, pollution, chemicals, food processing procedures, junk food, medicines like antibiotics, and lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol and lack of exercise - all conspire to deprive us of our essential nutrients. Anyone unable to have a balanced diet - which includes at lest six fruits and vegetables a day, whole grains, dairy products and small servings of lean meat, poultry or fish, may need daily supplements. The word "supplement" means something added. "Adding" to a basic healthy diet and lifestyle, or a prescription medication or therapy you’ve been given to treat a condition or disease.

5. Healthy Mental
Smile and be happy. Manage your stress levels and reduce worry and anxiety. Negative emotions are physically bad for your body. Negative emotions actually trigger the creation of Cortisol: a damaging chemical that depresses the immune system and can actually attack lean muscle tissue.  Cortisol also causes food cravings and negatively affects blood sugar.

We need to learn to empty both hands and let them relax a little. Sit down or lay down and let the world slow down around you. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your baby; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Practice some deep breathing techniques and really learn how to help your body totally relax.

6. Sleeping
Have at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Try to go to bed by 10pm, as the best period for the body to repair and heal itself is between 10pm and 3am. Therefore, have a good sleep and don't sleep late.
